Be a believer...

Only you can convince or dissuade yourself of anything – that’s the basis of self-motivation. But first you must care enough to try.

·      Job postings usually seek self-motivated individuals.

·      But are you ready to manage them effectively if they are?

Managers want all kinds of things in their employees but sometimes our management style gets in the way. We want good communicators – and sometimes we don’t listen. We want self-motivation – and sometimes we micromanage. We want good judgment – and sometimes we don’t ask for their input. We want good attendance – and often we don’t thank them for showing up. We want them to do what’s needed – but often don’t provide the coaching to support that. We want good performance – and rarely catch them doing things right. We want them to care – but don’t show them we care. We want them to trust us – but often don’t trust them. Just because you hired them doesn’t always mean they’ll be what you hoped they were. Make them believe they can do these things and you’re halfway there. Be actively being engaged with them and continually have two-way communications with them. Make them believe they are what you want and you’re halfway there. Believe in and support your employees today.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919): American politician and statesman – often referred to as TR, he was the 26th U.S. President.
