"Unless
you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never
grow."
Ronald Osborn
I’ve been a hockey fan
forever: had a Triple A team in my hometown growing up, went to college at
Cornell when they were the collegiate champs, cheered the 1980 men’s Miracle on
Ice victory, and have enjoyed Las Vegas’ Golden Knights. But yesterday’s thrilling Olympic gold medal
match between the Canadian and the US Women’s Hockey teams was possibly the most
exciting ever. Two teams that played for glory and pride, gave it their all
throughout the regulation and overtime periods, and into the shootout. While someone ultimately wins, there was no
loser when it was all said and done. The
Canadians cried, but they should be proud of how they competed; the Americans
beamed, but they should know that worthy opponents ultimately push us to grow.
I’m proud to cheer the US team and even prouder to applaud these games that
bring out the best in everyone. Winning and losing is a formality: everyone
wins when teamwork, sportsmanship and commitment are displayed as they were
last night. Congratulations to every
participant in in this year’s Olympiad.
