"If you don't love what you do,
you won't do it with much conviction or passion." Mia Hamm
This week, I’m reminded how
sport’s announcers used to talk about the
thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Olympic athletes work their
whole lives for the chance to perform and compete: only a few win medals, but
all passionately love what they do. Many companies refer to employees as team
members and attempt to create a team environment: these metaphors can be powerful
if done right. Start by being an employer of choice and letting that increase
the competition for available jobs; tell new hires why you hired them over all
the others and the levels at which you expect them to perform; catch them when
they do things right and celebrate their achievements; and provide training and
coaching to help them continually improve. Competitive people have the passion
and conviction to be the best: they’re the ones who help companies succeed. Foster
the kind of culture that attracts, motivates and retains the best employees
today.
