My consulting partner and I
recently worked with a client to train their supervisors to become better
coaches. We taught them the basics of coaching, the most important of which is
that it’s all about the person being coached.
We showed them how to coach, using role plays and group discussions to
point out the differences between supervising and coaching. But it wasn’t until we involved them in
actually coaching their subordinates that they started to really understand how
to use this practice effectively. Most managers think coaching is done
primarily when someone does something wrong: while it can certainly be used in
this context, that’s not how to get the most out of it. Coaching is best used
when employees need to understand their options and opportunities, and coaching
is exceptionally effective when used to catch and reinforce excellent behavior
and performance. Get involved with your employees and use coaching to motivate and
get the most out of them today.
