Many years ago, I
had lunch with
the Dean of the Cornell Hotel School: he told me if I didn’t hire the student
sitting with us he’d never let me recruit there again. I’d already been
impressed by the fellow so I offered him a job in our management training
program right then and there: he started out in Food and Beverage, quieter and
more studious than others who joined the program, but also more focused and
driven. Over the years people tried to get him to change to be more like them,
but he was competent and confident in who and what he was. Fast forward 20-something years and he’s the
president of one of the most successful casinos: still passionately believing
in himself and the work he does, and knowing exactly who he is. Sometimes you just know that the person
you’re interviewing is going to be a star: trust your gut and offer them the
job before they get away. And then let
them be exactly who they are.
