“It
is one of the most beautiful compensations of life, that no man can sincerely
try to help another without helping himself.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
The first
person I recruited from a college was Bill McBeath – he was a UNLV grad; today he’s
president of the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. My last college recruit was
Jiangpeng Yu –he was one of my students at UNLV; today he’s a front desk
manager in Asia. Of all the things I did professionally, the best was getting
to know and recruit students. No matter what line of work you’re in, there are
students who can benefit from learning about what you do. Faculty members are
always looking for working professionals to guest lecture in their classes
about what work is like in the real world, and the students need this
information to help them prepare for life after school. Get involved with
schools near you, find classes that teach the things you do, contact the
professors to schedule a guest lecture, and meet the students: you’ll help them
while helping yourself. Try making that one of life’s compensations today.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
(1803-1882); Philosopher, Poet, Author, and Essayist
