“One can never consent to creep when
one feels the impulse to soar.” Helen
Keller
A food and beverage server
made an appointment with me as I was putting together an HR team: she’d put
herself through college and wanted advice on how best to use her new sociology
degree. While realizing there weren’t many jobs that paid as well as the one
she had, she wanted to do more with her life and career: she was interested in
HR and I thought the combination of her work experience and degree made her
uniquely qualified to connect with employees. She took a job as an employee
relations counselor and went on to become a VP of HR, all the while blending
her knowledge of what it was like to work a shift with a passion to promote
fairness and respect in the workplace. If you have hiring responsibilities,
look for candidates with the passion to soar to newer and greater heights. They’re the ones who’ll become the leaders of
tomorrow.
Helen Adams Keller (1880
–1968): American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first
deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree.
