I’ve been a lifelong member
of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM): it has more than 275,000
members, many of whom have become friends. One of the Society’s key themes is
the notion of giving back to the profession: in this I’ve been inspired by many
great HR practitioners. My friend Kathy
McKee has been a member and volunteer leader for as long as I can remember: she
recently organized a group in the Santa Barbara area that meets with HR
managers from small companies; these practitioners often work alone and rarely
have the chance to network or attend national conferences and events. They meet every month and senior
practitioners like Kathy mentor and prepare the small company HR leaders for
their important roles and responsibilities: she’s personally involved in helping
others. There was probably someone in your career who helped make you better:
look for opportunities to do the same and give back to others today.
