Focus on being fair...

Lots of people seek to get promoted – and when they succeed, find it’s a double-edged sword.

·      Supervising can be rewarding.

·      Supervising former colleagues can be challenging.

·      Navigating that transition is a learning experience.

When you’re a line employee, you mostly think supervisors have it made. Wearing a suit and giving orders. But it’s a whole lot more – it’s making decisions and those can make some people happy and others not so much. We toss around terms like investigations and due diligence like they're something only in policy books – but they’re important, to the people affected and the way the policies impact them. Suddenly, those decisions loom large between a supervisor (or any leader) and the peeps they’re supervising, some of whom used to be equal colleagues and others who you thought liked you. But supervision isn’t about being liked – it’s about being fair. Even if being a responsible supervisor sometimes means pissing people off, keep your eye on being fair, don’t shy away from discussing your fair decisions with those who are affected, and know that over time that your fairness with shine through and benefit everyone. That’s how being fair turns into being trusted today.
