People can learn from mentors: they coach them things and allow them to observe. Both are great ways to learn.
· Watching others
· Is a great way to learn.
· How they speak, talk and act
· Can be informative and instructive.
· Pay close attention to the world around you.
Casino gaming in the US was restricted to Nevada until 1978 when a second gambling jurisdiction opened in Atlantic City. Working in the business back then provided newcomers like me the opportunity to watch and learn how the old-timers thought, talked, acted, and did things. While not a formal training method, it gave us many opportunities to ask questions about how they did things and why and listen to their stories. Casino hosts like Blackie Dardeen (a traveling dealer for years before becoming a popular casino host), Milton Frank (who worked previously in Cuba), Dickie Waxler (from Toledo), Claude Kimberlin (who had been a poker and rodeo champion), Billy Weinberger (a Cleveland restauranteur who later became President of Caesar’s Palace), Charlie Meyerson (former bookie and WWII hero turned host), and Bobby Baldwin (World Poker Champion and President of the Mirage). As young professionals learning the business, we listened carefully and watched intently. And we learned that the simple act of paying attention can take you a long way. And these guys were just the ones at the Golden Nugget and Mirage. Other casinos also had people like them, and other businesses in other industries have them too. Find a mentor in your business and watch and listen to them today.
