Leaders want employees that are engaged. In wanting to learn more, do more, be more. And the best way to do that is for them to be curious.
· Being interested
· Is not the same as
· Being curious about
· The things you need to know.
· Encourage your peeps to be curious.
I like to ask employees ‘how’s it going’? It’s such an open-ended question that they often don’t know what to say. It’s a good opener, and you can follow up with things like “tell me what you’re working on”, or “what else do you need or need to know”, or “got any ideas about how to improve things”. If you want your employees to be engaged, then you must be engaged with them – this promotes discussion and discovery and encourages them to be curious. But once you start them doing this, they’ll be asking you all kinds of questions and making all kinds of suggestions. Be prepared for this and make time to respond appropriately and thank them for all their engaging comments. It’s what effective leaders do. It’s the best antidote for being bored. Many companies include passion as one of their core values – that fits nicely with this: encourage your employees to be passionate about being curious today.
