The world was saddened by last week’s death of Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms.

For many, Elizabeth was the only British Queen we’ve ever known. Her reign spanned 70 years and filled the history books with pomp and ceremony. That made me think of the meaning and value of norms in our culture. Most everything we do is filled with historical meaning and it’s good to view and refresh these things over time. Corporate things like mission and vision statements, their values, and the common practices that are observed are examples of this. Companies often spend time developing these normative benchmarks only to then leave them on a shelf, both figuratively and really. If you have these, ask your employee if they can recite what they are. If you believe they are important, then embed them in the things you do. If you want them to serve as a guide to employee thinking and behavior, start by incorporating them into your efforts and actions. I’ve written in this space before about where I think they could be placed to have maximum impact. Now I’m encouraging you to find those in your company and begin to include them in the small things you do today.
Elizabeth II (1926 – 2022): Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 1952 until her death in 2022. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days is the longest of any British monarch and the longest recorded of any female head of state in history.
