“As one goes through life, one learns that if you don’t paddle your own canoe, you don’t move.” Katharine Hepburn
Grit is a term that comes to mind here. It’s about having what it takes to succeed. The 5 characteristics of grit are:
· Passion
· Courage
· Resilience
· Perseverance
· Conscientiousness
The picture accompanying today’s message depicts an example of grit found in nature. The trees here in the Adirondack Forest have lived and died for ages – some, like this one, have the grit to regenerate themselves. In humans, grit is what helps drive them to succeed, sometimes despite themselves or their circumstances. Many years ago, I paddled through the Adirondacks from Old Forge to Saranac. 90 miles. With sun, rain, and wind in our faces. That canoe trip took grit. It’s not easy to be successful – you must be passionate about what you’re doing, have courage to keep going in the face of adversity, be resilient enough to get up each time you fall, persevere when you feel like quitting, and conscientiously stick to your values and objectives. Grit is what gets you through the toughest things you face. Sometimes it’s not easy; but it’s usually worthwhile. In the end, it always comes down to you – if you don’t paddle your own canoe, you don’t move. Put a little grit into your efforts today.
