People talk a lot about all the hotels that have
opened in Las Vegas since Mirage launched a building boom there in 1989, but
they often overlook the fact that back then Mirage was the first new hotel to
open there in more than 17 years. All the hotels up to that point were
successful and similar, but relatively unimaginative: business was good and
apparently none thought it necessary to seriously upgrade their facilities or
design ideas. In the mid-1980s Wynn and his team scanned the competition and saw
an opportunity to create a whole new genre that would become known as
integrated resorts: interestingly, others failed to see the possibilities that
Wynn’s vision included. But as construction progressed, it became apparent that
his new Strip casino was going to be something completely different: The Mirage
volcano became the icon that foreshadowed the changes to come. The moral of this story: look at things
differently if you want to create something great.
Ralph
Waldo Emerson (1803 –1882): American essayist, lecturer, and poet who led the
transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century
