Get off on the right foot...

Getting started the right way is one of the most important aspects of achieving your objectives.

·      Know what you want and need to do.

·      Proceed carefully and collaboratively.

·      Keep your eye on the ball.

I used to think I had to be the best at anything I did, but now know that can be an obstacle to being effective. Because our work often involves others, we must make sure our objectives are achievable, aligned, and clear. Achievable as in realistic – don’t try to do too much and end up doing nothing.  Alignment as in everyone is on board – don’t start something until you’ve thought it through. Clear as in well-communicated – speak clearly and listen carefully.  And then proceed with caution: it’s easy to think things are going in the right direction, but if the ladder isn’t leaning against the right wall, every step you take just might get you farther away from your goal. Check in often, with everyone, and don’t be afraid to make and communicate appropriate course corrections. Professionals must balance efficiency – getting things right, with effectiveness – getting the right things done. If you can do both, you’re usually heading in the right direction. I’ve worked on enough big projects to know that this is how to go. Getting started right is the surest way to being effective today.
