Attract new employees with your values and culture...

When people tell me they can’t find good people, I suspect they mean they can’t find the right people.

·      Don’t be fooled by a fancy resume or lots of references.

·      Talk to applicants to see if you get along.

·      Make sure they’re right for you.

·      And you’re right for them.

Recruiters should ask candidates what they are looking for in a prospective employer. And they should talk about their company’s values culture. Most companies spend too much energy posting job descriptions that are more for compliance than recruiting – they shouldn’t be surprised when their applicants are seemingly unaware of what’s posted. The right ones want a good job working for a good employer – thus their interest in values and culture. In an interview talk about and sell your values and culture first and then answer any questions they might have about the job. Don’t be so attracted by skills and experience that you miss someone who’ll really fit. Be open and honest – you’re selling the company as much as they’re selling themselves. And if you’re lucky enough to find the right one, make sure your onboarding is consistent with what you said in the interview. Don’t let a ’bait and switch’ turn them off. The right people can work anywhere. Make sure your company is the one they want today.
