A business, like any organized endeavor, is only as good as its people. They’re attracted by and then become the foundation of its culture.
· Recruitment should be focused on attitude and fit.
· That’s where the company’s culture comes in.
I’ve been out of the active HR game for a while – but I still write and consult about it. I still study it. Beginning when I opened The Mirage, I’ve been keen on the process and practice of recruiting because the only real competitive advantage in any business is its people. Not just their experience and skills, but also their attitude and values. When hiring, recruiters should be most interested in the candidate’s fit – with the company, his or her new supervisor, and their co-workers. And with their culture – made up of the company’s values, beliefs, practices, and norms. Talk about it in the interview, focus on it in the job offer and onboarding, and reinforce it in your new hire training. You can’t communicate enough about your culture. Some call it an employee brand – whatever you call it, make it strong enough to attract the best talent. Wrap it around and let it nurture your people. Let it make your team your competitive advantage today.
