Get engaged in getting others engaged...

Indifference is the opposite of engagement. Especially in the context of work.

·      Indifferent employees bring everything down.

·      Engaged employees are committed to bringing everything up.

·      Indifferent employees and engaged ones are equally easy to spot.

·      What you do about each will affect your company’s overall performance.

While leaders can easily see and understand what an indifferent employee looks and acts like, for some reason, they can’t so easily do the same about engaged employees. Here’s what I think. An engaged employee is one who is enthusiastic about their job, invested in the success of their organization, and dedicated to its mission. Engaged employees take responsibility for achieving results, for how their own behaviors impact others, and making time for their own development. They are self-motivated and highly self-directed. And they are enthusiastic team players. Employees can easily be one way or the other – a lot of it has to do with the organization’s culture and management practices. Your culture must demonstrably value and support good employees, both in policy and practice. And your management practices must reflect the caring and commitment found in servant leadership and emotional intelligence – putting employees first and backing that up with an awareness of their needs. Indifference will happen if you let it; conversely, engagement will happen if you support it. It’s a no-brainer: nurture and support employee engagement today.
