Throughout my HR career people asked me for career advice:
I’d always tell them to find a job you love. Mind you: most of the jobs people
take are not the ones they love…at least not initially. Love at first sight is
a nice story but rarely found in work. Most of the time you have to grow into a
job: getting familiar and comfortable with your surroundings, developing the
relationship(s) with those you work with, and gaining both competence and then
confidence. I believe that you need to give a new job at least 6 months to
determine if it’s a good fit, both ways. So my advice to managers is to give new
hires time and space to get comfortable, to learn enough that they can relax
and participate, to be a good listener and an active coach, and to allow them
to give you feedback. The best job for anyone is most often the one they have;
the key is to allow them to make it the one they love.
