A big part of the summer here in the Adirondacks began today: young campers arrived at two overnight summer camps. Catholic Charities owns and runs one and the other is operated by the Masonic Lodge. When I was a youngster, my family had a summer vacation home here and my parents sent me to two other camps in the area. They all share a mission to help develop young people. I know the people who run the two camps here and they take that mission as a responsibility; the young campers have a great opportunity to learn and grow in this wooded, rural, lakeside setting, and together they’re committed to making the most of this summer experience. Hiking, swimming, boating, playing sports, learning nature skills, singing at campfires, and for many, being away from family for the first time. I loved my time at summer camp and remember fondly what these campers will now be experiencing. It’s great that these two organizations are keeping the tradition of summer camping going – and even better to know that they take their responsibilities so seriously – it’s an opportunity to teach that to their young charges. Organizations need to believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty. And to instill that in the people that work there. Whatever you’re doing, take it seriously today.
