Don't be shy about doing good...

cour·age

/ˈkərij/

noun

·       the ability to do something that frightens one.

o   "she called on all her courage to face the ordeal"

·       strength in the face of pain or grief.

o   "he fought his illness with great courage"

Of all the virtues and values, courage is one of the least talked about. And yet, without courage, we often act hesitantly about being kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest. I think that’s because we are afraid of being mocked by others. Possibly, by those who lack the courage to practice what we all should be preaching. There’s too much emphasis on ‘acting the part’ when in fact the part demands including these virtues if you want to be a respected and effective leader. Fact is, this is what people expect at work – kind and caring leaders, practicing truthful and transparent communications, forgiving in the use of coaching, adopting servant leadership practices, and being emotionally intelligent. Look at your organization – are these included in your value statements, do people walk this talk, and are people courageous enough to be genuine? If yes, catch people doing these things right; if not, find your courage to be a role model for them. Without courage, danger may lurk in the things nobody talks about; with it, process and performance excellence have a chance to grow and thrive. Don’t be afraid to be a standard bearer for creating a culture of excellence today.
