Don't wait to be told which way the wind is blowing...

·  ·      Out here in the woods, tree branches seek the sunshine.

·      And it’s a lesson of how only the heartiest ones survive.

The dense old-growth forests throughout the Adirondack Mountains are a testament to the survival and growth of the fittest. Looking in any direction, one sees the way branches shoot in all directions to find sun and air, and I often marvel at the ones that grow the tallest. It’s not like planting gave them an advantage – it’s got to be an inner determination and whatever the experts call a tree’s grit. Trees bending in the sun and wind mirror the way we become more resilient. Adversity helps us grow tougher and stronger — just like a tree — if we have developed deep roots of passion and perseverance and take responsibility for making the most out of whatever comes our way. Adversity can blow you out of your comfort zone where real personal growth most often occurs. And like it may blow off a dying branch that is sapping resources from more vital branches,[1] adversity may drive us to make accommodations or seek help from others that may strengthen our resolve, sharpen our focus, and prepare us for the hard work ahead. Being aware of your own strengths and weaknesses, and the same of those around you, will help you weather the wind and rain and prepare you for the sunshine. If you want to get ahead, take charge, and make it happen. Don’t wait to be told what to do today.
