Do what you should because you can...

This has always been true. What’s at issue is whether and how we use what we have.

·      Just because you can

·      Doesn’t always mean you should.

·      But, sometimes, because you can,

·      You absolutely should.

That’s a line from my Ted Talk[1] and it’s appropriate to today’s message. If your goal is to make a difference, that’s most likely going to involve some kind of innovation. And like most things in life, innovations can be big or small. In Belafonte’s case, the changes he sought were equal rights – his efforts made a large impact on that global issue. The rest of us mostly have more modest goals: personal, work, or family changes that we have some degree of control over. But whatever innovations you hope to bring about, you have the power, will, and capacity to make them happen. It’s just whether (1) you want to, and (2) whether you should. Companies have the power and capacity to make rules – whether they should depend on the rule itself and the impact it might have. As leaders, we must be aware of the power we have and determine to use it justly and wisely. Sometimes that means we do nothing; other times, we should proceed. Decide how to use your power, will, and capacity to make a difference in your world today.

Harry Belafonte (1927 – 2023): American singer, actor, and activist, who won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony (EGOT), and Oscar awards. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1994 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.
