Today’s quote sounds a lot like the Golden Rule. Interestingly, it’s also the foundation for being emotionally intelligent.
· Being aware of
· Yourself and others
· Is the basis of being an
· Effective manager and leader.
Covid changed everything. Employees were laid off in mass and lost the sense of security that they’d enjoyed throughout their careers. When those layoffs ended, managers found their former employees to be scared and distrustful. The integrity of the old superior/subordinate relationships was shattered, and leaders were ill-prepared to deal with that. As companies tried to rebuild relationships with their employees, managers were challenged to become more emotionally intelligent, a huge change from the way they managed pre-Covid. Being kind and considerate became a new baseline for management behavior and managers had to learn to become more empathetic and patient, and how to be more aware of the needs of their employees. That required companies to change many of their policies, philosophies, and practices, which in turn forced leaders to change their mindsets. This while trying to re-open shuttered businesses and markets. Don’t underestimate the needs of your managers to learn, practice, and adapt to these new imperatives. Take care of and be kind to them and be considerate of what they’re going through today.
