Managers often have trouble dealing with problems relating to their employee’s attitude or performance or attendance. While those may be policy issues that need corrective action, they more often require training and coaching, the things that managers should be able to do but often can’t. While companies focus much of their training dollars on compliance training, they often don’t provide their managers and supervisors with enough soft skills training to deal with these more prevalent issues. In my experience, managers need classes in basic soft skills such as coaching, communications, handling difficult conversations, and performance management. These classes provide them with the skills they need to deal effectively with those performance, attitude, and attendance issues before they become disciplinary issues. There’s nothing like a little competence to build people’s confidence in dealing with these kinds of issues. Give your managers and supervisors the training they need to do the things that need to be done today.
