At the end of the day, every leader – from the CEO to the line supervisor, is responsible for setting the tone in the workplace. Good or bad, it’s on them: they own it. Meaning:
· Being even-tempered.
· Being open and responsive.
· Being upbeat and optimistic.
· Being interested and supportive.
· Being available and willing to help.
I realize that leaders are like everybody else – they have good days and bad, sometimes get confused or cranky, and like to have time to themselves. But the thing about managing and supervising and being responsible for others, is that it’s always about the others, and rarely about themselves. Their employees are looking to them for answers, inspiration, and vision. So everyday must start with finding the good in everyone and everything, helping others to see and focus on it too, and to keep that optimism going throughout the day. Find it, believe in it, and get others believing in it too. Not saying you must always be a cheerleader but being there for others is a big part of the job. And giving feedback and directions in a clear, positive, and straight-forward manner. And if you must say “I’ll get back to you”, make sure you. Remember the best leader you ever had and strive to be just like them every day. They always focused on the good and you should too today.
