“How can I get ahead” is a question I’ve been asked often. There’s no formula and the answers are as varied as the people and their circumstances. It’s hard to put your finger on what it takes to get ahead. But, consider:
· You have to be good,
· And it’s good to be dedicated.
· You must be curious about the future,
· And courageous in the face of the unknown.
· And it helps to be in the right place at the right time.
Being good at what you do and working hard is important. Those who seek to learn and do more must always push their boundaries, volunteer for extra duty, and give more than they get. That’s the kind of dedication and commitment that doesn’t go unnoticed by management. If you want to do more, just ask: no manager I know will ever turn down that offer. And along the way, you’ll probably be in the right place at the right time: that’s often not an accident. Prove yourself, over and over, day after day, and your reputation will proceed you. I made it my business to know those who wanted to get ahead and took note of their work and interests. As a leader, you should too, and while you’re at it, provide them with coaching and mentoring. Encourage your people to be curious and support them when they try new things. Help them be in the right place at the right time today.
