I’ve talked to and
recruited lots of hospitality students: I’m always surprised that many don’t
believe their true potential. They spend 4 years at a school that specializes
in hospitality management, take courses in every major hospitality discipline, engage
in work-study and internship programs, find summer jobs that expose them to
different parts of the industry, and learn about all the latest trends and
practices: even so, they often don’t understand how they’ve benefitted from all
that. Companies that recruit will
probably have a better understanding of what students know and offer than they
themselves do: recruits may want a line level position but recruiters are
looking to quickly promote them into supervisory roles. Don’t let them put
limitations on themselves – mentor them to work hard, keep their eyes and ears
open, keep up with industry trends, volunteer for any opportunity to do more
(and learn more), and believe in the value of what they’ve learned and
experienced. And if you’re lucky enough to supervise a newly recruited
hospitality student, help them overcome their self-doubts: let them know how
much they can achieve today.
