Years ago, the City of Las
Vegas parks and recreation department established a Corporate Challenge:
companies were invited to compete in a myriad of Olympic-like games that pitted
company teams against one another. One
of the events was the “tug-o-war” and the teams traditionally got their biggest
and strongest people together to compete: the rules created a weight limit for
each team. We had a VP of Hotel Ops who
was a 4-letter athlete in college and he suggested we recruit smaller people to
the team: his theory was that more legs and backs combined would overcome teams
with bigger but fewer people. We
practiced for a month – more that we’d ever done before, perfecting the total
team’s ability to dig in and resist an opponent’s efforts. We had the will to
win as well as the will to prepare to win.
And win we did. Think outside the box when building work teams and give
them the time and encouragement to prepare today.
Paul "Bear"
Bryant (1913 – 1983): American college football player and coach. He was best
known as the head coach of the University of Alabama football team.
