I have a casino client that
also operates convenience stores: I never realized how complex those could be. Gas,
cigarettes, beer, milk, power drinks, candy, and a smattering of pre-packaged
food: right? Wrong! It’s all of those things, and so much more: like the video
displays at the pump that catch your attention; it’s the player’s club points
that make the gas more attractively priced; it’s where the beer and milk are
placed, and how the specials are displayed; it’s the ordering knowledge about
cycles that prevent waste; and it’s the staff greeting you by name when you
walk in and saying wishing you well when you leave. They didn’t do all those
things when the stores first opened, but when a new and experienced manager was
hired all of those things combined to double their sales and make those stores
great places to shop. You can buy gas
anywhere – there are pumps on every corner; the sin is thinking the experience
there can’t be great. Do what it takes to make what you do great today.
