The year after the first
Gulf War I had the opportunity and good fortune to recruit the daughter of
General Norman Schwarzkopf: she had his spirit and drive and became a very
effective manager. As he visited her
often, he graciously offered to address our managers and provided a keynote
address at one of our annual award’s banquets. Like General Bradley, he was
both a military commander and a natural leader of people: he spoke to us about
the ability to inspire others and bring out the best in them. One of his themes
had to do with what he called Rule 13: “when
given command, take charge” – that’s always stayed with me as an important
bit of advice. There are times in everyone’s life when we are responsible for
stepping up to the plate to get things done: when that happens to you, take
charge and lead others effectively.

Nelson Bradley (1893 –1981): General of the Army, and the first Chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff
