Keep it simple and straight-forward...

·      Today’s quote sounds like something our mothers taught us.

·      HR policies aren’t this simple and straight-forward.

·      But maybe they should be.

I opened a lot of hotels and casinos, meaning I had many opportunities to start from scratch writing HR policies, designing employee handbooks, and negotiating collective bargaining agreements. And I’m embarrassed to say that it took me more than 10 years to get something as simple and straight-forward as this incorporated into those critically important documents. I oversaw the development of new employee training manuals for more than 600 positions and conducted orientation sessions every week for 25 years – it took many tries to get something like this level of simplicity incorporated into those programs. Why is it so hard to hold employees to doing what’s right and telling the truth? Why is it so incredible to ask employees to just live the Golden Rule?  Are we so afraid that those things are ambiguous – I suppose so, that’s why all those documents and programs are full of rules about what you shouldn’t do. But I did eventually figure it out – that’s when we started telling people what they should do. If it’s not right – don’t do it; if it is not true, don’t say it; and treat others the way you want to be treated. If that’s not clear, we’re all in trouble today.
