The days are getting longer. The daylight hours continue to increase. The Summer Equinox is just around the corner.
· Summer break begins.
· Summer activities get planned.
· Summer days and summer nights
· Are filled with summer things to do.
· Make this a time for a summer attitude.
Get out. Take walks. Let the summer inspire and motivate you. Plan things with and for your staff to enjoy summertime activities together. Book clubs, hikes, bowling, whatever. Even though there’s no summer vacation at work (like when you were in school), it’s something we think about because of so many great memories of summer’s past. Great weather. Longer Days. Tailor made for building and strengthening relationships. Like the song Ventura Highway (by the band America) says: ‘where the days are longer, the nighttime stronger than moonshine’. Or Nat King Cole’s Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer: ‘you’ll wish that summer could always be here’. Don’t wait for others to make plans: step up and take responsibility – formally or informally. Get out of your shell and join in when events are announced – team spirit and teamwork don’t happen by themselves. It builds the trust and respect that are the foundations of teams. Everyone’s responsible for making it happen. Get your summer attitude going today.
Lionel Trilling (1905 –1975): American literary critic, short story writer, essayist, and teacher.
