Be the you that you are: nobody's better at that...

Whenever you start something new – a new school, a new class, a new job, a new team: it’s always a trying time – trying to be yourself while also trying to fit into a new situation. After a while, the newness goes away and it’s like you’ve been there forever. But those first days are hard.

·      First day jitters.

·      Going slow at first.

·      Feeling your way along.

·      Gaining confidence as you go.

·      Awkwardly getting to know everyone.

It’s hard to join an existing ‘team’. The key is to be you, not someone you hope to be. We all know that awkward feeling and it’s critically important that companies and their managers actively manage opportunities for people – current employees and those that are new, to get introduced, to have time to get to know each other, to break the ice, and to begin to get comfortable – with themselves and each other. It’s the most important part of ‘on-boarding’. Remember how you felt in that situation; don’t make them try to navigate those uncomfortable waters themselves: take charge for as long as it takes to get everyone to know each other. Then they can comfortably and confidently be themselves. The more effectively you do that, the quicker they will all get back to taking care of business and your customers. Help your employees get to the point where they can proudly wear themselves today.
