Hiring managers often spend too much time looking at resumes – they focus on the past, where the applicant has been. It’s better focusing on the person – understanding who they are and what they can become.
· Resumes look at history,
· They don’t focus on the person.
· The past is full of lots of variables.
· The future is all about opportunities,
· And a combination of nature and culture.
Professionals with a great attitude often go further than an applicant with a history. Hiring managers have no control of an applicant’s former work, but if they commit to a culture of excellence, meaning orienting and training new hires, coaching and mentoring them as needed, and listening to what they think, there’s almost no limit to how far employees can go. That’s what hiring for attitude and training for skills is all about. Don’t get caught up in where they’ve been – focus on their mindset today and where they hope to go. If they’ve been incarcerated – see if they’ve earned the right to and want a second chance. If they couldn’t get along with a previous supervisor – remember that it takes two to be a successful dance team. And if they weren’t motivated – that’s your professional opportunity to inspire them. Successful hiring is hard work – start by focusing on the journey ahead today.
