One thing I’ve learned: companies should make greater use of their values. Most just include them in their “mission/vision/values” statements, feeling good about identifying them and then making little additional use of them. But their utility can help set the tone and culture of a company. Far more than just posters on a wall. Consider:
o Listing them in recruitment advertisements
o Talking extensively about them during interviews
o Weaving them into the stories you tell in orientation
o Including them in how you frame your job descriptions
o Referencing them in your regular performance evaluations
o Using them as the basis of your recognition and reward programs
But wait… there’s more:
o Discussion starters in pre-shift meetings.
o Build a Storytelling Program around them.
o Discuss them in your regular staff meetings.
o Create volunteerism programs to truly serve them.
o And so many more: the list limited only by your imagination.
Just so you know: these daily messages started out as quotes and stories about a client’s corporate values – they asked me to bring them to life in pre-shift meetings. And now, 14 years later, the idea, and values, still live on. Like my former client, you likely put a lot of effort into deciding the values you wanted to best represent what you and your company stand for. Don’t let them just gather dust. Use them like a compass to point your staff in the right direction today.
