Over the years I’ve helped companies (my own and clients) create operating budgets and goals. It’s hard to create those plans, and even harder to achieve them. While they might start out as forecasts, much is riding on reaching those goals. The big company plan rarely succeeds unless it cascades all the way down to every department and employee: each must know the part they play and how important it is. That’s because:
· No one person is an island
· Each is but one piece of a puzzle
· All the pieces must match and fit together
· The total equals the sum of all the many parts
· Everyone must be focused if they are all to benefit
The success of these plans depends on everyone having a say in the objectives that are set for them, the metrics by which their respective parts are measured, and the interactive feedback that supports their efforts. When employees complain that nobody tells them what’s going on, there’s no better way to begin fixing that than engaging them in this planning process. With that , they will feel engaged and connected to the success of the business and the security that provides them. Their future is literally not to be forecast but created by every one of them. Don’t just talk about employee engagement, give them a meaningful part to play in their future today.
