Many managers aren’t comfortable creating or maintaining a work environment of excellence: they don’t want to give their employees that little extra push to get from good to great. I believe it really is just a little extra since the difference between good and great is often relatively small. The hard work is getting good at something: the inspiration and drive to get to great is then just a matter of a little more focus, dedication, and perseverance. In 1998, that’s how we approached the opening of Bellagio:
· We focused on the details
· That shaped the finishing touches,
· And we each knew that our respective roles
· Would make the total greater than the sum of its parts.
· That was achieved by creating an environment of excellence.
Just after Bellagio opened, we produced a commemorative picture book that captured the spirit and imagination of the people who worked on that project. Throughout that opening, we coached and inspired each of them to achieve just a little bit more, and that was the difference between a good opening and a great one… between it being a good hotel and a great one. As I leafed through the pages of that book again last night, that sense of pride and accomplishment was still palpable. Leaders can always be a yardstick of quality to inspire the people around them to excellence. So, remember this: regular work is hard… making it great is only just a little harder. Don’t settle for less when a little extra will produce greater results today.
