Know and care about your employees...

Manager’s dream about having employees that strive to become better and make everyone around them better too. Often, however, they’re disappointed to find that many of them lack that level of motivation and engagement: they just come to work, perform as expected, and leave… little different than when they came. If managers want more than that they must put in a lot more to get the results they hope for. Meaning they should:

o   Hire people who are optimistic and flexible.

o   Focus more on a willingness to learn than skills.

o   Train them to have the skills they need for the job.

o   Provide them with well-defined and measurable goals.

o   Make sure they all have everything they need to succeed.

o   Model the behaviors and attitudes you want them to have.

o   Coach, provide feedback, and catch them doing things right.

Most employees want to work in a positive and supportive environment and be recognized for their efforts. They want supervisors who know who they are and understand what they face each day. If you care, so will they. If striving to be better is encouraged and recognized, they’ll put in the effort. If they have a hand in making things better, recognize and reward them in meaningful ways. My point: you must be actively involved if you want your employees to be engaged today.
