My message yesterday was for hiring managers… about the best ways to start new employees off right. Today I’d like to address the new employees that take those jobs. If, as I discussed yesterday, hiring managers provide you with accurate information about the company and what you can expect, then then this message addresses your part of that bargain. If you decided what they offered and promised met your expectations, then you should make the most of that opportunity. Meaning:
· Start with a positive attitude and show up every day with it
· If there’s something you don’t understand, ask a lot of questions
· Keep an open mind – new jobs can be filled with lots of challenges
· Learn everything so you can make it everything you hoped it would be
Don’t give up easily – it’s hard for new employees and their new boss and colleagues to get comfortable with each other (just like whenever you’re meeting new people). Be yourself, be open to them and your new environment, and enjoy learning about it and the job. Don’t jump to conclusions – listen carefully and don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t understand something. A 90-day introductory period is for both you and the company to find out if it’s a good match. Remember, it’s in both of your best interests to work things out and stay. Freedom is what you do with the new opportunity you’ve been given. Make the most of it today.
