Most people are filled with hope and excitement when they say “yes” to a job offer – the challenge for the companies they join and the supervisors they work for is to fulfill the promise of that optimism. That promise is contained in how hiring managers describe the company, the opportunities that exist, and the things someone joining the company can expect. Here are three things to help keep that promise:
· First – make sure all those are accurate and true: train your hiring managers how to accurately describe what new hires can expect.
· Second – support those promises: make your pre-start communications clear, your day-1 welcome sincere, and your new-hire training full of information, tools, and support to ensure success.
· Third – treat them fairly every day thereafter: say what you mean and mean what you say, don’t play favorites, and give them their due.
This is the stuff of employee satisfaction. It’s the stuff of trust and respect. And the stuff on which loyalty is based. Companies today are complaining they can’t find employees. Or keep the ones they have. Keeping your promises is the best way I know to attract and retain good employees. Make them happy they said yes. Start with that and see where it takes you today.
