After performance comes presence. Professionalism isn’t just about doing the work well — it’s about participating, contributing, and shaping the environment around you. Professionalism isn’t silent; it’s the courage to use your voice to make the work better. Professionalism isn’t just how you perform — it’s how you participate.

Employees value feedback from their supervisors — more is almost always better. But those same employees are often hesitant to give feedback upward, worried about saying the wrong thing or creating tension. That’s why training supervisors to create genuine safety zones matters so much. When employees feel comfortable speaking up, professionalism becomes a shared responsibility rather than a one‑directional expectation.

This is where supervisors need more than technical skills. They need the people skills — the communication skills — that help them become better coaches, listeners, and leaders. Professionalism shows up in how they model two‑way communication, how they use their presence and voice to encourage speaking up, and how they contribute to building a culture where voices are heard and respected. I learned early in my career that the difference between a good manager and a great one is his or her ability to communicate effectively.

I saw this firsthand in the large casinos I helped open and manage. Ten percent of the staff were supervisors and managers — more than 1,000 leaders in each property. They were on the ground every day, responsible for keeping employees on track and customers satisfied. It was in the company’s best interest to ensure they had the skills to manage effectively. And to me, that meant making sure they had the communication skills to lead well. That’s not a skill you ever want to take for granted.
