The first unofficial Labor Day took place on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, when the Central Labor Union organized a parade in New York City. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill making it a national holiday on June 28, 1894, following the Pullman Strike. It was a holiday designed to celebrate worker’s achievements.
That was then, this is now.
Labor Day 2026 is a day for leaders to thank employees, union and non‑union, for the skills they bring to work every day — and the way they use them. And to actively support a culture of fair treatment, straight talk, trust, and respect. That’s what every worker wants.
