There’s nothing quite like the sting of realizing the villain in your story might be you. We are, more often than we admit, our own worst enemies.
It’s never pleasant to face the truth of self‑caused trouble. Misdirection. Misjudgments. Mistakes.
Doesn’t matter which one — each leaves a knot in your stomach because you know better. And you know you could have prevented it.
When we were developing The Mirage, we audaciously tried to build our own HR/Payroll system. The design was terrific — that part was fun. But back then, companies didn’t have the IT depth to build such systems in‑house. We had to contract it out, long‑distance, and hope they could deliver what we envisioned. They couldn’t. It failed.
We knew it immediately. And we kicked ourselves for not applying the same discipline to that project
that guided every other part of The Mirage build. We were embarrassed. Worse, it set the company — and all of us — back. Had that project succeeded, we would have had the courage, support, and momentum to pursue other IT initiatives that were delayed five to eight years.
When you accept personal responsibility, you realize that continuous learning and growth are necessary
to always be able to do your best. You’ll win some and lose some. But you will own your destiny. Starting today.
