“We’ve Always Done It This Way” Isn’t Professionalism 🚫

Efficiency is worthless when you’re perfecting the wrong thing. “That’s how we’ve always done it” is the last thing you want to hear when talking about process improvement. Professionals must confront the habits, traditions, and legacy processes that sabotage success and growth.

Process improvement should be part of everyone’s job — not as a separate initiative, but as a continuous group effort. Old habits thrive in the comfort of doing nothing: not examining them, not discussing them, not improving them. Not every process needs an overhaul, but the ones that do must be updated.

Sometimes the market forces change. Other times, sharp eyes and smart practices reveal what needs improvement. When those improvements aren’t made, creativity and excellence suffer. Leaders must promote open discussion and have the courage to follow through. If they don’t, the message becomes loud and clear: excellence is not expected here.

There are many definitions of professionalism, and most miss the mark. Technical competency, reliability, accountability, and integrity usually top the list — but curiosity and initiative should be right there with them. They’re the engines of continuous improvement and must be fostered by any organization that wants to excel.

Clear away the bureaucracy that stifles initiative. Listen to what employees are telling you about what they need, what customers expect, and what efficiency could look like. Stop saying “no” and start saying “tell me more.” Your active interest will fuel their curiosity and confidence.

You’re not expected to know every process that needs a critical review. But you are expected to promote a culture where others feel empowered to do that today.

Peter Drucker (1909 – 2005): Austrian American management consultant, educator, and author, whose writings contributed to the philosophical and practical foundations of modern management theory.
