Make a plan for your life....

You need a plan if you want to be great. You need a vision, to be able to articulate it, to figure out exactly how to do it, and to work hard to make it happen. It had been 17 years since the last new hotel had opened before Steve Wynn had the vision and drive to develop The Mirage and create a new genre known as an integrated resort. Everybody thought it was a foolish and expensive dream that could never succeed: they industry in Las Vegas had long been on a safe and conservative road when he took that chance. It’s difficult and risky to strike out on your own and try something new and different – but often that’s the only way to have the opportunity to achieve greatness. Had Wynn followed the conventional wisdom back then the skyline and fortunes of Las Vegas would not be what they are today. The moral to this story: pursue your dreams and plans and try to make them happen. That’s how to make great things happen today.

Here's something you may want to consider for one of your New Year's resolutions.....

Steve Wynn designed just about everything in, on and about the properties he developed. There was no detail too small to escape his consideration or approval: attention to detail was part of his and everyone else’s job description; let’s just say it was deeply embedded in our corporate culture. He’d work countless hours and months in the design studios and continue checking and refining things right up to the time the facility would open: opening on time was very important and so was getting it right; often those two goals were in conflict.  I’ve seen floors and windows torn out and  redone at the last minute to ensure they were consistent with the detailed plans; while it was sometimes maddening it reinforced the message that you only get one chance to make a good first impression. Every job – big or small – deserves our absolute attention to detail to make sure it’s absolutely right.  Competition is fierce everywhere and only those willing to commit to the highest levels of excellence are going to win. Let that be one of your New Year’s resolutions today.

Welcome 2018!

New Years’ Day: a time for reflections and fresh beginnings. Last night was a celebration of all that’s been and a hope for all that can be, wrapped into one. Most of us made resolutions about what we wanted to achieve in 2018: these are mostly things that are aspirational and have never been. Welcome this New Year with excitement, curiosity, openness, flexibility, humility, and a commitment to be a better you.

Happy New Year!
